Mid Summer Report 2016

Well, its been an interesting summer. We ended up getting a hot new rally racing car recently, but unfortunately, they dont come with trailer hitches. So until we install one in mid August, there will not be much fishing going on here at the Piontek house. We got out just a few times recently, after our buddy Kevin offered to take us in his Princecraft. We finally experimented with the Lovertail 2, and had some great hits on it. It seems like when they commit to that lure, they crush it with all they have. It is so fun to fish with. The lure is extremely awesome in weedy, slime-free areas. The tail wiggles so well and looks so realistic in the water. We also were very happy that the lure seems to track correctly 100% of the time without rolling, even at high speeds. Our favorite setup has been a 7' Medium Skeet Reese Fiberglass Crankbait rod, with an older Rick Clunn Baitcaster 5:1 ratio spooled with 10 lb Seaguar Flourocarbon and using the SAN DIEGO JAM KNOT. It casts very very well with this setup, and I just cant get enough of the fight you get on a fiberglass rod. We have not lost a single fish on this Skeet Reese rod or our Rick Clunn rod yet. It acts as a shock absorber and really battles them well without them throwing the hook. We have also continued to keep having the most success on Alex's #4 Bad Boy lure. It by far has been our top lure this season.
Alex found himself a mess of crawfish at a boat ramp we had fun playing with. We let them go that day due to WI DNR regulations of not possessing angling equipment with crawfish, so we came back a week later and filled a pot of boiling saltwater and dill with them tasty dudes. Unfortunately they were lacking in size and we shared half the batch with our chickens. We cant all be crawfish catching super stars like Jason and Darrin Tedford you know.
​A few weeks ago, good buddy Kevin and I went out testing some lures for smallmouth fishing. I tried out our Bee Whacker Weedless buzzer for the first time ever, and he had some fun with his favorite topwaters, the prop bait and the Whopper Plopper. I had a real healthy around 3lb thick smallmouth nail my Bee Whacker from the side, but didnt get hooked. Later I lost probably a 12" bass because my drag was too loose. Then I landed a 1 lb 13 oz smallmouth and an average pike for around here while Kevin landed a nice 2 lb 9 oz smallmouth, a pike, and a few smaller smallmouth. It was a blast to have all of our hits on topwaters that day with a fast current and high waters from recent flooding. Last Sunday we gave it one more shot but we really struggled on a small lake with great water clarity. We only fished three hours, and Alex was able to boat a big rock bass on a finesse worm for largemouth, and a very angry pike on his Lovertail 2 that wailed on the lure right at the boat in deeper water. I believe the bass and pike were probably willing to bite that day but we needed to switch to deep water summer tactics with a good depth finder or flasher. We spent our time focusing on the deep weed edges and some boulders in 10 ft of water. I think maybe drop shotting in 15 ft or carolina rigging would have been the correct choice. We hung it up after getting our butts whooped and headed to the house. Our plans for August and September is to carve up some small vacuum baits, and build a modified version prototype of the Bee Whacker for Largemouth with a cut out buzz blade. We will test these in NW Wisconsin and hopefully in La Crosse and on Lake Michigan.
